localfeeds visualized

localfeeds visualized

When I first saw localfeeds, it was an a-ha moment .. a why didn’t I think of that. Ross Karchner is the one who did, and made it happen.

A couple weeks ago, Ross asked for someone to do something cool with localfeeds and worldKit. I put together a little demo of localfeeds San Francisco, but since then I got itchy, and had to keep working on it. So, now there’s a bigger demo.

localfeeds visualized amply demonstrates the concept. It’s a little slow, since it proxies both the image, from the USGS, and the RSS from localfeeds.

I’d like to see it progress further. Hopefully localfeeds is interested in this pursuit. It’s sorta an inverse of World as a Blog, more Neighbors as a Blog. Should cover local areas, on the entire globe. Hard part there is finding any source of maps. Further, there’s a real opportunity to push for richer geocoding in RSS .. item level location information, covering both the subject and the writer. Some place name matching may also be on order.

new for worldKit: Maps from the USGS

new for worldKit: Maps from the USGS

It has been tricky, to find local maps for worldKit. No longer, at least in the US.

MapProxy is a simple interface to USGS maps, ala TerraServer. It generates the image, and proper config.xml settings.
