Here are nuggets in action ::
Download
myRadio.root, and install in your Radio Userland/Tools directory
Notes for current myRadio users
If you downloaded myRadio.root after Oct. 15, and have registered, you'll automatically receive the changes next time you restart Radio, or select myRadio->Update from the Radio tools menu.
if you haven't registered, please do, it just takes a minute
if you have an earlier version, please download the latest
If you currently use Quotes.root or Weather.root, please remove them from the Tools directory of Radio. These modules are now included directly in myRadio.root. Sorry, you'll need to re-add the modules and customize them again.
HOWTO
Publish
Use the "nugget" macro to publish in weblog posts, or in templates. You can publish as many nuggets as you wish.
| For example,[Macro error: Can't compile this script because of a syntax error.]
will publish a yahoo stock quote; [Macro error: Can't compile this script because of a syntax error.]
will publish the current temperature in San Francisco |
The first argument to the nugget macro is the content type, and the second is the key.
Valid types are
"quotes" : argument should a stock ticker
"weather" : argument should be a US zip code
"ebay" : argument should be an Ebay auction id
"fedex" : argument should be a FedEx tracking number
Aggregator
myRadio is an extension of the Radio Userland RSS news aggregator to multiple pages and multiple content types/functionalities. The GUI is MyYahoo-like. More information on myRadio is here.
To add Quotes, Weather, Ebay Watcher, or Fedex Tracker to myRadio, click [Edit Content] on any myRadio page.
Select the modules you want. Clicking [Edit Layout] on any myRadio page allows you to rearrange content.
In the title bar of the modules, click [Edit] to customize the service.
myRadio will update, every 15 minutes, any service you have published or aggregated.
Some things to note
Nuggets are updated only when Radio is running and online.
A nugget is published by Radio for 7 days after the last time the macro is executed. In other words, after the nugget drops off your weblog home page, it will be published for 7 more days.
When publishing html, the nugget works via a javascript include.
When publishing rss, the nuggets works via an iframe. only aggregators which render html will show the nugget. Radio Userland and Amphetadesk are two which do.
Future directions, etc.
Each service described here is an xmethods web service. With the myRadio framework, each service is configured from a table of data only -- no code is required to build customized webservice modules and nuggets. This will make it straightforward to add new services in the near future.
The RSS feed uses iframes to include dynamic data. This only works for aggregators, like Radio Userland and Amphetadesk, which render HTML. More ideal implementations would include external content references within the syndicated file, in RDF, and aggregators would have the 'smarts' to handle these references.
In the works, is a screen scraping tool kit. This will first be utilized for integrated myRadio with MyYahoo -- you'l be able to include your customized MyYahoo modules (Movies, TV, Quotes, Scoreboard...) in your aggregator, and publish as nuggets.
